My crew agency performs background checks for us. Why should we perform another background check?

Answer: Many agencies perform superficial background checks, our checks are more detailed. For example, if you were to run a criminal back ground check on a potential crew member only convictions would appear, however if he was arrested five times and never convicted, you would never know.

Why should I spend thousands of dollars on detailed security checks?

Answer: Obviously there is a cost benefit factor when performing check. When you are paying a Captain or Engineer $100,000 a year to manage a multi-million dollar vessel, the cost benefit of a detailed back ground check makes sense, however a deck hand might require a more simplified check. Also keep in mind that in the competitive market of chartering your vessel, being able to tell a potential client that the crew taking care of their family has been thoroughly examined is important not only for the client but the owner who is insuring the clients’ safety.
